Object: First Stone Painted with Human Face Discovered from Jomon Period

Why is this interesting/important? Although dogu figurines and intricate pottery are well known characteristics of the Jomon period, paintings are extremely rare. The triangular shaped stone measures apdx 12-13cm per side, is 1.4 cm thick, and eyebrows, a nose, mouth and one eye can be clearly seen painted on the surface. This is the first example of a painting of a face to be discovered from the Jomon period.
