Object: Oldest Octopus Jar Traps in Japan

Why is this interesting/important? The Osaka Prefectural Museum of Yayoi Culture has on exhibit the oldest octopus jar traps in Japan, dated to the Middle Yayoi Period. Although this style of trap began in the Osaka area, it spread to all over Japan. Takoyaki, a snack where a piece of octopus is cooked in a ball of flavored batter, is a regional specialty of the Osaka area, and it seems fitting that this type of octopus trap has such a long history in the area.
